Writes, edits and coordinates coverage of university research news from all units, including Arts & Sciences, the Nicholas School of the Environment, the Pratt School of Engineering and the School of Medicine. He is also an instructor in Duke’s Science & Society initiative, teaching science communication for faculty, students, and staff.

Background & Experience:

Joined Duke in 2007 from the University of Michigan, where he was director of life sciences communications. A 15-year newsroom veteran and member of the National Association of Science Writers, Karl is a former winner of the AAAS science writing award.

Laura Brinn

Responsibilities:

Leads international communications, social media, and other external communications engagement initiatives for the university.

Background & Experience:

Joined Duke in 2001 and served in media relations and marketing roles at Duke’s Fuqua School of Business and Duke University Health System before joining Public Affairs and Government Relations in 2010. Prior to joining Duke, worked in healthcare communications at Ogilvy Public Relations Worldwide in New York City. She earned an MBA and a master's degree in liberal studies from Duke, and holds undergraduate degrees in communication and German from East Carolina University.

Responsibilities:

Heads the Office of News and Communications and leads the university’s media relations and communications efforts, which connect Duke with audiences around the world through an expanding network of digital and social media channels.

Background & Experience:

Came to Duke in 2015 from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), where she was the assistant vice president for strategic communications and adviser to the provost.

The arts and humanities, including art and art history, classics, cultural anthropology, Germanic studies, Slavic studies, philosophy, sociology, theater studies, music, dance, Romance studies and online education.

Background & Experience:

Came to Duke in 2011 from the Raleigh News & Observer, where he wrote about higher education issues across North Carolina. Prior to that, he held reporting posts at the Durham (N.C.) Herald-Sun and the Hartford Courant, where he covered education, crime, politics and local news. He is a graduate of the University of Connecticut, where he majored in journalism and political science.

Background & Experience:

Joined Duke in 2014 with extensive experience in social media and brand-building as well as analytics and cross-platform planning. She graduated from the University of North Carolina with a bachelor's degree in English literature.

Joined Duke in 2008 after 4 1/2 years as an editor-reporter with The Associated Press in Raleigh, N.C., and 11 years as a bureau chief, editor and reporter with newspapers in California, including The Tribune in San Luis Obispo, The Record in Stockton and the Sun-Star in Merced.

Responsibilities:

Provides strategic marketing consultation for the university as a whole as well as individual units. Acts as creative lead on university-wide marketing projects. Helps to maintain brand and message consistency across all media platforms.

Background & Experience:

Denise Haviland came to Duke University 13 years ago, following a 17-year career in branding and marketing. As an award-winning producer, creative director and project manager, Denise worked in Chicago and Seattle independently and with agencies leading projects for multi-national corporations like Microsoft, Proctor & Gamble, Wells Fargo, Johnson Controls, Baxter Healthcare, AEI Music International and Alcoa Steel.

Background & Experience:

Sam joined the Office of News and Communications in 2017 after 8 years of building websites and other digital assets as a Web Producer at Boston University. He has a bachelor’s degree in computer science from Boston College.


 

Alison Jones

Covers the humanities and social sciences, including English, literature, history, African-American studies, Asian and Middle Eastern studies, religion and women’s studies, economics and education.

Background & Experience:

Joined the Office of News and Communications in 2015 after serving for two years as communications director for the Duke Center for Child and Family Policy. An award-winning writer and radio producer, she is a former reporter for the Raleigh News & Observer, where she covered education and child and family issues. She holds a B.A. in history from Yale University and an M.F.A. in nonfiction writing from Bennington College.

Background & Experience:

Came to Duke in 1995 after working for 10 years for the Baton Rouge, La., Advocate, the last seven years as assistant city editor. Prior to that, he was a bureau manager for UPI and reporter for the Winston-Salem Journal and the Sunbury (Pa.) Daily-Item. Graduate of Bucknell University.

Background & Experience:

Joined the News Office in 2012 as a Social & Digital Media Fellow after studying environmental iconography in Singapore as part of a Benenson Award in the Arts. Graduated from Duke University in 2012 with a bachelor’s degree in biology and English.


 

Lyndsi Lewis

Responsibilities:

As part of the two-person social media team at Duke, Lyndsi manages the Duke University social media accounts and co-leads the student team responsible for the DukeStudents social media channels.

Background & Experience:

Lyndsi joined Duke in 2015 as a social media specialist at the Nicholas School of Environment and moved to the Office of News & Communications in 2016. Prior to her time at Duke and while earning her master’s degree in history, she worked as a communications assistant at Louisiana State University. She holds an undergraduate degree in mass communication with a concentration in print journalism.

Owns the Event Calendar, oversees day-to-day processes and trains users with emphasis on their role as communicators to engage potential audiences. Manages other projects as they emerge.

Background & Experience:

Joined Public Affairs in 2015 and News & Communications in 2016. Previous experience includes more than 20 years at Duke communicating with diverse audiences, preparing complex reports and coordinating people, processes, and resources. Serves as a senior college advisor and as a disciplinary advisor to students who face charges of violating university policy. BA in history and MA in liberal studies, both from Duke.

Serves as administrative assistant to associate vice president for news, communications and media. Interacts daily with office staff on various needs to assist in their job duties.

Background & Experience:

Arrived at Duke in January 2008 after working as a payment processing clerk for a Durham collection agency. Other work experience includes four years as a front-end processor at BCBSNC and 1-1/2 years as an administrative assistant at Standards Based Solutions-East. She is also the owner and operator of Lock-It-In Event Planning.

Background & Experience:

Joined the Office of News and Communications in 2016 after serving as a Science Communication Intern at Brookhaven National Laboratory. She was a 2014 AAAS Mass Media Fellow and a founding organizer of ComSciCon, a series of communication workshops for graduate students in STEM. Kara earned a Ph.D. in physical chemistry from MIT in 2015 and is a member of the National Association of Science Writers.

Background & Experience:

Joined the Office of News and Communications in 2017 after earning his master’s degree in strategic communications from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Before graduate school, Pablo worked as a journalist and communications consultant back in his home country, Chile.


 

Blyth Morrell

Responsibilities:

Leads the strategy, execution, and implementation of digital communications for Duke, focusing on the university’s primary digital vehicles. Works closely with teams across the university to ensure an integrated and strategic approach to all aspects of Duke’s digital presence. Functions as a visionary, strategist, implementer, and manager to creatively and effectively present Duke’s content to its most important audiences.

Background & Experience:

Blyth Morrell came to Public Affairs 5 years ago, following a 4-year position managing the Web Services group within the Office of Information Technology. As a former technical director, creative lead and senior developer, Blyth worked in various design and development groups around Duke and throughout the Raleigh-Durham area. She has BA in English and a minor in computer information systems from Lees McRae College.

Background & Experience:

Julie joined the Office of News and Communications in 2014 with eight years of experience in television news. Julie was previously a reporter for Time Warner Cable News in Raleigh and Wilmington, N.C. and the NBC affiliate in New Mexico. She was honored with the North Carolina Associated Press Award for “Best Health Reporting” in 2013. Julie is from the Bay Area and graduated from the University of Arizona with a bachelor’s degree in journalism.
